Sexual Harassment

One late afternoon, Maria and Jim were finishing up a project they had to present to a potential client. Jim had higher rank then Maria but always tried to work with her whenever there was a project that had to be done. Maria was passionate about her work and loved that people such as Jim liked how she worked. That night after they were done with the project as they were closing up the office, Jim went over to Maria as she was putting on her coat he whispered in her ear "Would you like to become a head manager of this department?" Maria said, "Yes of course, why?" "Well there just so happens to be a position opening," said Jim. "Really? Wow where do I apply?"said Maria. "Well there just so happens to be a Hilton around the corner. How about we get a room and the job is yours." Maria felt so humiliated and shocked that Jim actually thought of her in that way instead of it really being for her professionalism.
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations, as well as to the federal government. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.

Dear Ms. Larson
You recently set Allison, Ken, and I in a team to develop an e-catalog of Brooks products. Unfortunately this has not been a well rounded team experience. Ken has not shown the effort necessary for this project. He has missed meetings; when he does come he shows up late and requests Allison and I to recieve the information from other sources. I can forward you two emails I have that were sent to Allison regarding Ken's disinterest. We do not want to come off as accusers , but this client is important to us. We have adressed the issue to Ken, but turned out to have no good outcome. If you have any ideas, please email or call me back at your convience. Michelle

Handling Interpersonal Conflict

Allison, I know we are in a tight situation but by sending Ken a discouraging email we will not be able to sove the problem. I say we should have a meeting with Ken and explain to him our dilemma. We need to be clear to him that this project is important to us and it should be to him too, especially since this is a team effort. Also firmly mention that we could lose Brooks as a client which could cost Green Flag good amount of money. Hopefully this will motivate Ken and if we see that it does not, then we can take a more serious action. Talk to you when I'm back in the office. Michelle

Preparing for an Interview

1. Tell me about yourself?

a. This is said to be the opening question for an interview. I feel that this is the perfect time to let them know your qualifications and experience.

b. "I graduated from East-West University. I majored in Business with Marketing as my concentration. Since then, I have been working for companies in their PR and Marketing department where I have attracted many clients. While I have enjoyed working for those employers, I am looking for something new like this position. This position enables me to expand my horizon into a company like yours".

2. Why are you interested in employment with us?

a. They ask this question because they're interested in why you choose them for employment. Since obviously the last company you worked for did not fufill what you were lookin for.

b. "This company is a good fit for my creativity. I feel this position offers just what I am looking for. I know there are other candidates who can fill the position. But my passion for sucess sets me apart from the rest. I would bring great results for this company.

3. Where do you see yourself in five years?

a. This question is the opportunity you have to express your goals and plans. I would think this is one of the questions in which they decide if your in or out.

b. "My long-term goals involve growing with a company where I can continue to learn, take on additional responsibilities, and contribute as much of value as I can".

4. What are your weaknesses?

a. I always thought that this question meant that l would literally have to say my weaknesses. I was way wrong. My mom works in the business field and she said that this is one of those trick quuestions where the employer gets to know who you are.

b. "In my last position, I wasn't able to develop my public-speaking skills. I'd really like to be able to work in a place that will help me get better at giving presentations. I also want to increase my knowledge in the Marketing field. When you feel a company gives you a chance to do increase your knowledge and speaking skills, then you have found a winner, such as this company."

5. Would you be willing to take a salary cut?

a. Now that the economy is tough, this question might come up. I feel this is a delicate question where you have to really think about it.

b. "I am making $ blank amount now. Like any other person I would like to improve on my salary. But honestly I am more interested in the job itself. I would be willing to accept a lower starting salary. I would hope that we can revisit the subject in a few months after I've proved myself to you."
